På dagens ledarsida avslöjas att tunga företrädare för Islamiska Domstolarnas Förbund i Somalia bjudits in till konferens i Stockholm. De representerar The Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia, en nybildad organisation vars första kommuniké uppmanar till ”motstånd” och hyllar de ”hjältemodiga krigare” som utför det.

På konferensen deltar även ambassadör Marika Fahlén, Utrikesdepartementets rådgivare för frågor rörande Afrikas Horn och Sudan. Hon talar, enligt programmet, under rubriken ”The Role of Swedish Government to promote peace and Stability in Somalia”. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, den förre exekutive chefen för Domstolarna som anses vara en moderat islamist, talar om ”The current political situation in Somalia”. Domstolarnas Abdifatah Mohamed Ali håller föredrag om ”The economic destruction of the occupation – The Bakara Market”.

Invitation to Somali Peace Conference in Stockholm
Somali-Swedish Network for Peace would like to invite you hereby
a conference under the theme of Let’s make inclusive peace in Somalia. In
the conference we would discuss different policy regarding Ethiopian troops in
Somalia as well as evaluating strategies and policy focusing on Post-Ethiopian
troops withdrawal from Somalia. We will further explore how to create conditions so that the International community can take more active role in the Somali conflict.

The aim of the Somali Peace Conference in Stockholm
We as Somali Swedish community would like to arrange a conference were we can create a suitable environment to have a genuine dialog between the Somali stakeholders. The conference will focus on the flowing points.
1. Building trust among Somali stakeholders
2. Support genuine reconciliation effort between all Somalis
3. How we can create a mutual understanding between the International community and Somali stakeholders.
4. How can Somali Diaspora actively participate peace building and reconstruction of their native country?
5. How can we use Islam as source of inspiration for peace building and reconciliation
6. How can we achieve peaceful coexistent with neighboring countries?
7. The role of European Union to facilitate the peaceful agreement between All Somali stakeholders.

The Somali-Swedish Network for peace will take responsibility for delegate’s logistics and transport during their stay in Stockholm.

Background of the conference
In September 2007 the Union of Islamic courts, the Somali Diaspora, Free Somali parliamentarians, representatives of the Somali civil society held a conference in Asmara. The conference established an Alliance for the Liberation and Reconstitution of Somalia(ALRS).

The Asmara conference of the Somali opposition groups was first of its kind for the last 16 years. Hence the participation of the conference was not based on 4.5 clan formulas but, was based by sole Somali identity and ideology of seeking justice, peace and equality among Somalis regardless of their clan affiliation.The aim of the ALRS is to liberate the country from Ethiopian occupying troops and to re-establish a unified Somali state.

The result of the conference
The delegates elected a central committee comprising of 191 members, and an executive committee. Sharif Hassan Aden, former Somali Speaker of Parliament of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), was elected to be the Chariman of the central committee. Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, was elected to be the Chairman of the executive committee.

The delegated adapted a constitution for the alliance where democracy and Shura process are basis of the decision making process for the alliance and the country.

The Somali-Swedish Network for peace participated the Asmara conference with 10 delegates representing the network. Delegates contributed to the conference successes by indorsing the Swedish way of political compromise thinking and the importance of achieving inclusive decision making in the conference.
