Processen och pressen

Sommaren 1988 tillbringade Joan Didion med att besöka demokraterna och republikanernas respektive partikonvent, inför presidentvalet samma höst (Bush-Dukakis). Hon åkte hem desillusionerad och bitter – kanske inte första gången – och gjorde vad skrivande människor gör i sådana lägen: skrev en strålande, passivaggressiv essä i New York Review of Books, där hon bland annat kritiserade de konventbesökare som såg den politiska processen som mer väsentlig än de människor som faktiskt påverkas av denna process:

”These are people who speak of the process as an end in itself, connected only nominally, and vestigially, to the electorate and its possible concerns. ”She used to be an issues person but now she’s involved in the process,” a prominent conservative said to me in New Orleans /…/

When we talk about the process, then, we are talking, increasingly, not about ”the democratic process,” or the general mechanism affording the citizens of a state a voice in its affairs, but the reverse: a mechanism seen as so specialized that access to it is correctly limited to its own professionals, to those who manage policy and those who report on it, to those who run the polls and those who quote them, to those who ask and those who answer the questions on the Sunday shows, to the media consultants, to the columnists, to the issues advisers, to those who give the off-the-record breakfasts and to those who attend them; to that handful of insiders who invent, year in and year out, the narrative of public life.”

I dag är det här så självklart – processen har blivit så alltomfattande och dominerande – att ingen längre tänker på det. Således har diskussionerna om krispaketet, i en tid då 20 000 amerikaner förlorar sina jobb varje dag, inte kretsat kring vettiga argument för hur man kan rädda dessa jobb – än mindre de individer som redan förlorat sina jobb – utan snarare har man pratat om den politiska processen: Kommer det här att skada Obama? Har republikanerna vaknat upp på nytt? Vilka följder får det här för kongressvalet 2010?

Så kan exempelvis Washington Post prioritera sin förstasida åt spekulationer om att republikanernas tjurskalliga opposition är ett tecken på ”the glimmers of rebirth”, (en analys som inte ens stämmer om man nu faktiskt kikar på siffrorna)
