Snart är det tillåtet att gilla USA igen

Oavsett vad som händer de kommande åtta månaderna så är presidentvalet redan en triumf för USA:s ställning i Europa. Det är nog rimligt att tro att det någon gång under 2009 återigen kommer att bli lagligt att uttrycka kärlek till USA i västeuropeiska storstäder.

Själv har jag tappat räkningen på alla de gånger under de senaste sju åren då upprörda människor i Rom, London, Paris eller Berlin hysteriskt skällt ut mig för att jag ens har mage att bo i USA.
Men snart kommer det nog vara svårt för även de mest bångstyrigt USA-hatande européerna att generera det förakt för landet som Bush/Cheney-eran banat vägen för.

Det är svårt att se hur John McCain, Hillary Clinton eller Barack Obama någonsin skulle kunna bli så hatade.

It is hard for even the most hardened anti-American not to be impressed by the fact that the Democrats will nominate either an African-American or a women as their candidate, while watching this twisting and turning campaign play out gives the lie to the view that United States is some kind of corporate oligarchy.

Another piece of good news is that all three candidates with a realistic chance of being the next president play well abroad in a way that George W. Bush does not. Indeed, with a more pro-American leadership in Europe and the sting being drawn from Iraq by the success of the surge, the next president will have a real window of opportunity to chalk up some quick wins in 2009. The rest of the democratic world will be keen to show America that cooperating is worth its while. ”

SvD:s läsare verkar – precis som de flesta européer – föredra Obama.
