The Times:
Valérie Trierweiler, the scorned companion of François Hollande, exacted revenge today with a bitter book denouncing France’s socialist president as an unfaithful liar and a leftist who hates the poor.
In “Merci pour ce moment” (Thank you for this moment) Ms Trierweiler describes a Christmas dinner with her working-class parents, brothers and sisters in Angers. The future president turned to her and joked: “They’re not very nice, the Massonneau family.” The jibe shocked her because her family “is so typical of his electors”, she writes.
“He stood for election as a man who does not like the rich. In reality, the president does not like the poor. He, the man of the left, calls them ‘les sans-dents’ [the toothless], very proud of his humour,” she writes.
The line, which was quoted by Le Monde ahead of tomorrow’s publication, will further damage Mr Hollande’s image among left-wing voters, over half of whom have disowned the president for betraying his socialist campaign pledges in favour of pro-business policies.
In extracts in Paris Match magazine today, Ms Trierweiler, 49, describes her horror on the night in January that Closer magazine revealed Mr Hollande’s affair with Julie Gayet, an actress. She was stunned, she said.
Trierweilers flicknamn var alltså Massonneau.
