60-talets hits: Melanie!

Lay down (Candles in the rain) med Melanie, som upptäcktes på Woodstockfestivalen, blev en hit 1970. Melanie Safka, som numera är 62 år, sjöng på 60-talet på klubbar i Greenwich Village i New York. Hon fick ett skivkontrakt 1967 och släppte sin första singel, Beautiful people, samma år. Woodstock följde och det kommersiella genombrottet kom just med Lay down, som hon spelade in med gospelgruppen Edwin Hawkins Singers (som hade en världshit 1968 med Oh happy day). Lay down var en hyllning till Woodstock-publiken och är en skön, gungade låt med Melanies speciella vibratoröst. Hon fick flera hits som What Have They Done to My Song, Ma, Brand new key, Peace Will Come (According To Plan) och Stones-covern Ruby Tuesday. Så här sjöng Melanie i Lay down:

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace.

Melanie hade många framgångar men en del kritiker hatade henne. Jag minns en recension av albumet The Good Book i Rolling Stone. Recensionen löd i sin helhet: ”Melanie har gjort en ny LP”.
