The EU will fall apart if half of its powers are not returned to member states, according to Nicolas Sarkozy.
“Europe must give back 50 per cent of its competences to member states,” the former French president said. “If not, the system is going to explode.”
His swipe at the EU came as he stepped up his campaign to reconquer the leadership of the opposition Union for a Popular Movement in a vote next week.
Instead of meddling in all aspects of citizens’ lives, EU powers should deal only with industry, agriculture, competition, trade negotiations, energy and research, he said in an internet posting while he was in Mulhouse, near the German border, where he addressed 2,000 supporters. (från The Times)
